A line of heavy rain associated with an approaching cold front is creating heavy downpours in areas of Kona and Kohala, according to a Friday morning short term forecast issued by the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

The heavy rain is falling at about 1 to 2 inches an hour, according to forecasters. The heaviest downpours will produce minor ponding in poor drainage areas, which can make driving difficult.

The heavy rain is expected to move east and upslope this morning, according to forecasters, who added that rainfall will increase during the next few hours south of the Keauhou and Captain Cook areas.
